Is It Better to Board Your Cat or Leave It at Home?

January 15 2023

As much as we love our feline companions, sometimes we just can’t take them with us when we go on vacation or out of town for business. When this is the case, knowing whether to board your cat or leave her at home can help ensure that Fluffy is comfortable and well cared for while you’re gone.

Read on as a Bloomington, CA vet talks about things to consider when deciding whether or not to board your cat in a kennel.

Things to Consider

When considering a boarding kennel for your cat, there are a few things to consider before making a final decision. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Does my cat have any special needs? Is she elderly or ill? Does she require medication?
  • What kinds of things does my cat enjoy doing? If she’s an indoor-only kitty who spends most of her time sleeping in bed with me, then it might not be a good idea to leave her alone all day at the boarding facility.
  • Is there someone you can trust who will come over every day and check in on Fluffy? If there isn’t anyone available who can do this (or if you don’t feel comfortable asking them), then it might be better to consider boarding your cat.
  • Will Fluffy be able to get along with other cats? If you’re not sure, then it’s probably best to leave her at home. If she’s used to being around other cats and has never had any issues, then it might be okay for her to stay at a kennel.

What You Can Expect From a Quality Boarding Facility

Whether you’re taking a trip, going on a business trip, or just need to leave your cat for an extended period of time, there are plenty of reasons to board your cat.

Here are some of the most common:

  • Your pet needs medical attention that can’t be provided by a house sitter.
  • You’re moving and need someone to watch your cat while the house is being prepared for occupancy.
  • You’re going out of town for an extended period and need someone to feed, water, and change the litter while you’re gone.
  • Your cat has special needs or health issues.
  • Your pet is too old to be left alone for an extended period
  • You’ve just adopted a new kitten and need someone to help socialize and train him or her.
